Why Our Teachers are so Cool:

Elmira Calalo – Math Teacher

What are you most excited about for the new school year?

Being part of the OCCC program is what I’m most excited about. I look forward to working with young adults towards fulfilling their goals. At the same time, I want to enrich myself by being with them.

What are your goals for this school year?

For this school year, I have two goals: to be instrumental to 99.9% of my students successfully (1) learning the concepts and enhance their skills in math and (2) earning their credits in the shortest possible time.

What do you love most about teaching?

It is never boring. Each year, each student you meet is a whole new experience. I feel happy and rewarded knowing that somehow I have contributed to a student’s personal growth and development.

Reuben Quesada – Economics and History Teacher

What are you most excited about for the new school year?

Meeting new students, finding out their goals and helping them reach their goals.

What are your goals for this school year?

Helping students understand democracy and where it comes from, helping them to understand their rights and liberties, and helping them to understand the voting process.

What do you love most about teaching?

Watching my student’s eyes light up when they’ve discovered they understand a concept (otherwise known as the “ah-ha” moment).

Alan Hobbs – Science Teacher

What are you most excited about for the new school year?

I am most excited about working with adults who are motivated to improve their lives. Teaching is a lot more fun when the students are motivated.

What are your goals for this school year?

My goals for this school year are to make sure I keep the academic levels of the class challenging, that I teach the standards that they would have been taught in their prior schools, and that I build a rapport with my students where they know I will help them both learn the material and graduate.

What do you love most about teaching?

What I love most about teaching is that I am making a difference in the lives of my students. Whether they are minors or young adults, all people need mentors to guide them through life.

Raechel Lin – English Teacher

What are you most excited about for the new school year?

I am most excited this school year to grow in my professional development and growth as a teacher as well as getting to witness the progress of my new students.

What are your goals for this school year?

Some of my goals for this school year are to get my students engaged and enthused about the subject matter, to build a structured classroom environment, and to help my students graduate!

What do you love most about teaching?

What I love most about teaching is that it’s never the same every day. You always learn something new, sometimes about a subject and sometimes about yourself, but it’s never boring. I love that light a student has in his/her eyes when discussing a topic they are passionate about.
